Massage Therapy Should Play an Integral Part in Helping Relieve Low Back Pain
It is clear that massage Therapy has many benefits. One thing that is sad is that it is underutilized as therapy for most pain that people experience. Massage is often way down the list of therapies or drug interventions suggested to patients who present pain whether it be lower back or else where in the body to a health care practitioner.
Though there are many helpful modalities, Massage Therapy, Physical Therapy, Acupuncture, Energy Work, Chiropractic and more our health care system seems very narrow minded on what can work when it usually proves for patients that it is an Integrative approach that is the most effective.
“It takes a village to manage pain, especially low back pain. Research shows that back pain is relatively resistant to mono-disciplinary therapy regimes. To make it even more complicated, no one treatment is best for all patients.
Integrative care–Eastern modalities, massage therapy, mental health, movement therapies, relaxation techniques, structural modalities, etc.–in addition to conventional treatments such as medication and injections, may be the answer. (Artner, 2012) According to a recent clinical trial, the most common multidisciplinary treatment plan for low-back pain included exercise, massage therapy, and self-care education. This treatment was the most recommended combination by the study’s integrative care team. (Maiers, 2010)
Recommendations have come out of these studies, suggesting an optimal integrative model of care, which should involve collaborative, interdisciplinary, and non-hierarchical team approach. All disciplines should be represented and contribute to the treatment plan discussions. To enable true patient-centered care, patients should be included in the integrative healthcare team’s decision-making process.” Except from blog by Diana Thompson, LMT to read full article see blog at Massage Therapy Foundation.
