What to Buy Organic

Summertime is fruit and vegi heaven!!! All the most yummy things are in season. It is possible to spend a fortune at the farmers market but what are the  most important fruits and vegetables to buy organic. I do hope you are shopping your local farmer’s market to get the freshest produce and support the local farmers.

The dirty dozen most contaminated fruits and vegetables  are:

  • Apples
  • Celery
  • Potatoes
  • Peaches
  • Spinach
  • Strawberries
  • Sweet Bell Peppers
  • Grapes (imported) wait a few more weeks and we’ll have local!
  • Nectarines (imported)
  • Blueberries
  • Lettuce
  • Kale / Collard Greens

The Environment, a public health advocacy organization, recommends spending the extra $ on the dozen fruits and vegetables above. The group identified these 12 based on review of the USDA’s pesticide data. I also often choose to go organic on anything that grows in the soil… beets, carrots, etc. Save a few pennies on the others – such as watermelon and mushrooms – and enjoy the vibrancy of eating healthy clean food!
